Backlinks – Are All Links the Same?

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

This is a very important question that, unfortunately, many internet marketers seem to pay little or no attention to. The general approach adopted by many internet marketers seems to be that that quantity counts over quality – but is this really the case?

The resounding answer to both these questions is – ABSOLUTELY NOT!.

We need to be very clear that all links are not equal – in fact it is possible to go even further than this and actually say that some links are less than worthless, in fact they may even actually be harmful to your ranking.

If you were to create a ranking list of possible links then this would be the order:-

1) Links from.edu and.gov domains are the “best” types of links a site can get – particularly if the site has a high pagerank as well.

2) Links from well established, high pagerank general domains (e.g..com,.net,.co.uk etc)

3) Links from more recent, lower pagerank sites (i.e. more recently created / less well established sites)

4) General sites

Many of the “Dominate Google” tools and sites that you see that offer an apparent shortcut to getting a top ranking on Google will simply create hundreds of backlinks to your site from their existing network of sites (usually blogs). Whilst this may give a short term boost to your rankings this will not be sustainable. The quality of these links is normally very poor and you will eventually be penalised for these links and your ranking will drop accordingly.

So all links are definitely not the same and you need to invest time and effort in gathering the right type and quality of backlink for your site.

How Search Engines and Link Building Work Together

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

In a world where competition is at its peak, where the Internet has made irreversible changes to the way business works, the only way to thrive is through link building and SEO services.

Why does my company/website need SEO?

It doesn’t matter how great your content, or how beautiful your web design is, if you don’t have enough traffic to your site, then it’s useless. With 20 billion sites online today, there’s a big chance that your site won’t be discovered unless you hire SEO services which can help you get the word out about your products or service.

The majority of traffic to any website is driven by the search engines – Google, MSN (now Bing), Yahoo and Ask Jeeves. People go to these sites in order to search for the information that they need. If your website is not in the database of these search engines, then you are missing out a great opportunity.

Keep in mind, however, that the goal of SEO is not just to get your site indexed, but also, to get you on the top of the search engine results page (SERPs). According to many studies, when your site is listed in the top 10 of the SERPs, then its highly likely that people will visit your site. What does this mean for you? Well, it’s pretty simple: the more people who visit your site, the greater your chances of making a sale. The more people who know about you, the greater your chances of creating a loyal customer base – repeat customers who will definitely refer you to their family and friends.

How do search engines work?

Perhaps you’re asking yourself, “What does link building have to do with SEO?” Before we can answer that question, we will first need to understand how the search engines (SE) work. SEs are responsible for three operations:

Crawling the web using their spiders. These bots use the hyperlink structure of the web to crawl from one page to another.

Indexing of documents. Once a page has been crawled, the bots save these pages in a giant database of documents. They are sorted according to the keywords found in the pages.

Processing queries. When an Internet user goes to the SE and types in his/her keywords, it is the SE’s task to retrieve the information that is related to the keywords used.

Ranking results. A list of websites will be returned to the Internet user. The list is arranged according to the order of importance, as ranked by the search engine.

From these 4 processes alone, we can already see how link building services is important. First, in order for your site to be crawled, you need to get more backlinks – those links from one website pointing to your site. According to estimates, only 8 – 10 billion out of the 20 billion WebPages today have been crawled and indexed. There are several sites that cannot be visited because there is no way for the search engines to discover them.

Second, website ranking in the SERPs is determined through a special algorithm known only to the search engines. While no one knows what are the exact factors that can get you placed high on the list, we know that search engines give importance to the relevance and popularity of a website. Popularity in this case refers to the number of backlinks to your site. The more backlinks you have, the more popular your site is. But millions of backlinks do not guarantee a front page listing in the SERPs. You also have to consider the relevance of your backlinks.

If your site is about computer tutorials, then you need to get backlink from sites which are related to your niche. For example, a link from a Photoshop tutorials site can help you gain greater authority but a backlink from a furniture dealer will not count.

If you have been working with a link building services for quite some time now and you haven’t reached the first page of the SERPs, then you had better start evaluating the kind of links you are getting. Check for the relevance, as well as the quality of the links. High PR, .gov and .edu sites are considered as sites of high authority. If you are not getting backlinks from them, then you had better switch your SEO services today.

There is a lot of chatter on the internet as to whether .edu domain links to your site are really worth having. Some are arguing that having such a link is the holy grail of all back links. On the other hand though, some are saying they are worthless.

There is value to both points of view. On one hand, students are selling links and posts to their education hosted blog to marketers that has the end result of producing spammy links and websites. There is easy money to be made. Just send a student an email offer he cannot refuse to place your link on his site and before your PayPal account has cleared the student has released the funds.

Search engines have recognised this. The search engine will look at a student’s blog that talks about daily activities and meets any links that are out of character to the theme of the blog as suspicious.

Looking at the other side of the argument, if you have an education domain article linking back to your site then that link will convey a lot of authority as well as traffic. Such an article might be a Professor discussing the merits of his latest studies and links to your site as a reference.

As in the first example, the search engine will look at the Professor’s page and content, the links incoming to the domain and possibly the page itself. Having looked at the links and the content the search engine will give a score to the page. Not being spammy but authoritative, the search engine will give any links on the page a high rank.

As you can see by the two above examples having a .edu back link to your site is important – maybe. That is, what is the origin of the original page that carries your link? If it’s spammy then no link value, but if it’s authoritative then there is your holy grail link.

Having a .edu link to your site under the perfect circumstances means that you will have a very powerful back link that is a strong vote for your site and therefore trust. It is this trust that your site will leap above and beyond other sites that do not have this level of trust.

Therefore, having such a link is very important to your site and link building campaigns. It is the value of the link that you need to access before considering asking for a link.  I do not condone buying links as that is not the name of the game, but I do consider a donation far more appropriate.

As with any subject there is a fore and against argument. Each argument has merit and must always be considered. When you have decided what stance you will take on the subject having taken into account both considerations then you can make your decision as to whether .edu links are wrong or right, worthwhile or simply worthless.

Website Enhancement When You Buy High PR Backlinks

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

A backlink is one where the incoming links from other sites are directed back to your website. Website owners are constantly trying to get higher number links back to their site from other important sites so that their own website goes up in page ranking list of search engines.By using effective search engine optimization tools it is possible to make the page ranking of a particular website increase to higher levels. This involves taking initiatives to rise up to the top of the list of websites being brought back as and when a keyword of your own website is typed as a search word in any of the popular search engines. So, essentially a good number of links coming from other websites by effective utilization of SEO tools will help to raise the level of high PR in your own website.

Relevance of High-Quality

Although getting several links back to your website is vital, the relevance of the linked sites is also equally important to take up the page rankings. Getting inbound links from popular blog sites and social networking sites, article directories is what brings a large number of reflected links to the website for which higher page ranking is sought. The methods for buildup of such links need be restricted to a couple or more strategies as mentioned above for better page rankings.

Source out Suitable Sites for Backlinks

Submission of good content in article directories, forums, commenting from community members etc. with backlinks have also been found to catch the attention in search engines for the website in terms of page ranking. Improvements have also been noticed when the website has inbound links such coming from “edu” domain sites with active participation in blogging and article contribution. This is because educational sites are considered to be trustworthy and enjoy top level category in the public eye.

Why Aren’t I Ranking High on Google?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

A common question that is asked by almost all new internet marketers is;

“I am posting articles and blog posts based on my keyword research but when I search with my keywords on Google, I can’t find anything I have written!”

Here’s how I would respond:

You are starting off on the right foot. Keyword research is essential, otherwise your time is wasted. However, there’s one more important step you need to take if you want to rank high in Google.

An overview of the whole process would be as follows:

Find a keyword with good search volume and low seo competition.
Write an article based on your keyword.
Post your article on your blog, Squidoo lens or EzineArticles (EzineArticles is the easiest to rank high with).
Get quality backlinks to your article. This is the most important step of all for ranking high on Google and is most likely why you’re not ranking high at the moment.

What do I mean by quality backlinks?

The backlinks should be:

anchor text of your keyword (do slight variations so that the backlinks are not all identical – this will flag suspicion).
dofollow links (by default, WordPress comments links are nofollow and Google doesn’t credit these.
on sites with a good Google Page Rank. The higher the better.
on.edu or.gov domains. Getting a backlink from these sites scores you big points with Google.

When creating your backlinks, don’t overdo it. It has to look natural. About 3 new backlinks a day is safe.

Internet Marketing – Backlinking Secrets

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

I think that this is the most talked about topic on any SEO forums, and it might not seem like it since a lot of the conversations revolve around software and systems. The funny thing is that all of those things come back to back linking and how to rank high as fast as possible online. They might be camouflaged with different words and phrases but once you look through all of the smoke all of these different methods strive to achieve is the best way of back linking available. I have got caught up in the mystery of it during my first few months as an internet marketer as well, but thankfully moved on. There are people that never quite grasp it, and tend to leave the game before realizing that the simplest ways are usually best.

Article Marketing and Blog posts are still the best way to get your name out there, and that is because I only speak about white hat techniques. If you are into black hat and can sleep well at night knowing that you could be de-indexed or banned since you are trying to cheat the system then all the power to you. In my opinion that is not a great long term strategy and most people will feel much better doing it the right way and having those backlinks stick for a very long time.

My personal favorite is article marketing since the search engines love this type of advertisement. They know very well that you are going to try and get your site known, but by writing articles you are actually helping people out and are not doing it in a spammy way. You can never have too many articles, and will never get in trouble even if you post thousands of them each month. It all depends on your work ethic and creativeness as those are really the only factors that might be holding you back. Also remember that some of the more known article directories will get your articles republished on other sites and this will give you additional links pointing at your site with unique IP addresses. This is something that the search engines love.

The issue on blog posts is a tired one as many people look at the do-follow and no-follow rules but I think that it is a waste of time. I have done a few experiments where I posted on relevant and similarly themed to my site blogs without paying any attention to what kind of rule they follow and it worked great. All of the search engines threw me up in the ranks and I think that it is a large waste of time to focus on such details. Make sure that those blogs are relevant and that you post quality comments and use your main keyword as your anchor text or you will be ignored.

If that is not enough, there are ways of getting free.edu links as well. I will not go into the entire process on here but it can be found by a little research and those will also give you a leg up above the competition. I have still not tested it much, but do have some of those links on my sites and they definitely do not hurt the rankings. The main thing to keep in mind here is that slow and steady with a random amount of links per day works best as it really looks natural in the search engine’s eyes.

How To Get Edu Backlinks

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

All internet marketers know how important getting backlinks to their sites is. Without backlinks your site will not get found or ranked if it is found unless of course there is no competition for the keyword you are using.

Backlinks differ in their importance. Backlinks from high PR sites will weigh more than sites with low PR. But the same works for sites that are relevant to your site will weigh more than a high PR page that is not relevant to your site.

A backlink from an educational site will weigh more on your site than a.com,.net,.org, or a.info. The.edu site should be relevant to your site. You can then leave a carefully thought out response in the comment box. Your comment needs to be relevant, engaging, and helpful so it does not get disregarded as spam and trashed.

How To Get.EDU Backlinks

.edu backlinks hold more authority than your traditional.com links. Getting.edu backlinks is not hard if you know how to do it. A simple search on a search engine that looks like this

site:.edu inurl:blog + “post a comment” + your keyword

Place your keyword in the your keyword spot. So if I was doing a site on how to build a mini greenhouse then my search would look like this:

site:.edu inurl:blog + “post a comment” + mini greenhouse

This would bring up blogs that allow commenting that have to do with mini greenhouses. You then read through them and leave a comment with your URL on the blog. Hyper text your link if they allow this on the blog. This will help with conversions of anybody that may click on your link. Use a keyword that is relevant to both your site and the site you are leaving a comment on as your hyperlink.

This technique is best used for backlinks to your own site not trying to get traffic for another’s site through affiliate links. However if you are going to try this with affiliate links then cloak your link.

You do not want your actual affiliate link on any comments you make. At least use a URL cloaker or shortener such as bit.ly or tiny URL. Your actual affiliate links contain your affiliate information so do not use these without cloaking them in some way or another.

What is Link Strength?

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

When learning how to increase the number of deep links to your website, you should also learn the difference between a weak link and a strong link. A strong link does not have to be from PR4, PR5 or PR6.com domains. Instead, establishing links from .edu and .gov websites, no matter their PR number can be a more effective campaign choice.

Any.com domain can build a high PR number with the right amount of online content, backlink effort and traffic. This does not mean, however, that the website offer trusted information. The .gov and .edu websites are run by educational and government authorities which means the content is held to a higher standard.

The Visitor and the Domain

If two websites a.com and a .gov publish an article on the same topic, which website do you believe will offer the more trusted information? The government website will be the source people will believe. Authority is the work often used. The more authority a website has, the stronger the link strength.

Link strength is especially important for a website that has focused all marketing efforts on the home page of their website. The inner pages, or source URLs for deep links, need to play catch up. There is no better way to play catch up that by establishing a few links to deep pages of the website on .edu and .gov domains.

How to Earn a Link on a Website With Authority

Earning links on common.com domains is much easier than an educational or government website. The easiest and most effective way is via comments on government blogs. Nearly every government website now has a blog associated with that website. These blogs allow comments, but the comment needs to be related to the website which can be hard for some businesses.

The web hosting company, for instance, would have a harder time finding a government blog to comment on, but the women’s health website would not. This does not mean government links are not attainable for businesses outside of the health sector. Blogband, for instance, is a government blog dedicated to the establishment of a National Broadband Plan.

Educational blogs are also available for commenting. The great thing about education is that nearly every business topic will be covered by some form of educational blog. When commenting on these blogs, make sure they have the .edu domain designation.

Link Strength and a Common Theme

If tackling the .edu and .gov websites for deep backlinks is not something on your marketing list, the next best choice is the relevant blog. Posting comments on a website that compliments the URL and even guest blogging on popular websites for a link back to a deep inner website page on the same topic are both great ways to build link popularity online with strong links.

The deep links to your website are often more important than the links to the home page. If your marketing choices have populated the Internet with links to your www[dot]yourpage[dot]com domain only, you need strong links to the inner pages to regain link balance.

Quality backlinks should always be your goal when planning your SEO strategy. We all know there are good links and bad links, but what should you do if you find a link to your site from a site that is considered to be a “bad neighbor”?

We talk a great deal about how to get high quality inbound links, but we rarely discuss what to do if you get links from sites that are considered to in bad neighborhoods. Managing your site reputation is also a factor to consider in a good SEO strategy.

As far as SEO is concerned, what are bad neighborhoods?

A site with illegal content, no original content or sites that practice banned behaviors have been labeled by Google as bad neighborhoods. These sites are typically spammer domains or sites that use techniques to attempt to manipulate search engine rankings.

Will it damage your reputation if these types of sites link to you? Technically, no. Google recognizes that you do not control who is linking to you, but you must be very, very careful not to link back to them. For this reason, you want to really monitor your trackbacks and blog comments to be sure that you do not approve a site in a bad neighborhood. Any links you have on your site are considered your own responsibility so you must be very choosy about the ones that you? approve.

If you find that you have an extremely large number of inbound links that are low quality, you must double your efforts to get high quality links to balance them out. You can try to contact some of the sites and request that they remove your links from their sites, but in all honesty, you are better off spending that time increasing the right kind of links to your site.

Concentrate on getting some very powerful links such as links from .edu or .gov sites and sites that have a page rank above a PR 5. Google expects you to have some lower quality links as it would not be natural to have all PR9 links. Making steady efforts to get the best sites to link to you will negate any ill effects you may have gotten from bad neighbors linking to you.

Monitoring your progress and the source of links to your site is a good habit to get into. There are a good many tools available online that will help you do this. Link checker sites and Yahoo Site Explore will provide you with a good deal of information on where your links are coming from. If you find some that really bother you, you can then take action to contact the webmaster and request they remove the offending link.

For the most part though, you need not concern yourself overly much about things that are out of your control. Just keep your eye on the ball when it comes to the things you do control and never stop building the highest quality backlinks yourself.

First let us discuss what .edu and .gov are. They are domain name extensions similar to.com but with some very key differences. Anyone can register.com, .net, org, etc domain name extensions as part of their domain names. The .edu and .gov extensions are not available to just anyone. You must meet very strict guidelines to be entitled to register those domain extensions.

Who can register a .edu or .gov domain?

.gov domains are limited to United States government organizations at the federal, Native Sovereign Nation, state, and local level, and U.S. territories.

.edu registration is limited to U.S. post secondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

Why is everyone keen on getting a link on an .edu or .gov site?

If you understand the value of backlinks or inbound links, you may not understand that often quality far out-weighs quantity. Because of the strict guidelines on who may qualify for the .edu and .gov domain names, the search engines place a very high quality score to those websites. One link on a qualified site can be worth thousands of normal backlinks when it comes to boosting your site up the positioning in search engine results.

As a result, it has become the focus of many off page SEO strategies to get as many links on government and education websites as possible. But do not assume that a link anywhere on a .gov or .edu site will give the same value.

It has been the trend for students to “lease out” links to their student pages for a fee. These links will have little or no value. Usually there is a ~studentname in the URL and that page actually has very little value. To get a genuine .edu or .gov is very rare and very difficult. Someone might be lucky enough to get one as an honourable mention for a donation or for participating in a research project, but the fact is that an educational institute or government agency is not likely to hand out wholesale links to any internet marketing website for very good reason. They need to protect the integrity of their website.

So do not focus a great deal of time on this. If it comes along it is like winning a lottery, but your chances are just about as likely as winning that lottery.
